Concert Review: Hamilton Leithauser, February 25, Drake Underground

Commenting upon the opening song in his set, Hamilton Leithauser noted that the bass and drum tracks for that tune were recorded way back during the Obama administration. That comment illustrated two things about him – firstly, that he’s not a wasteful guy and wanted to put those tracks to good use, and also, it served as a reminder that yes, Hamilton Leithauser’s been at this for a while. In fact, if you think about it, the time between now and when Leithauser got his start with The Walkmen is roughly the equivalent to the time between then and the time when the Sony product they took their name from was first launched. What does this mean? Nothing really, but it’s a thought that popped into my head during Leithauser’s show at The Drake Underground on Tuesday night, so I figured I’d share it.

Another sign that Leithauser’s been at this for a while was his prompt start time, taking the stage shortly after 8:00 with no opening act. Clearly the man knows what his (middle aged) audience wants – the chance to get home at a reasonable hour while still enjoying an evening of quality rock and roll.

Touring in advance of his soon to be released album This Side of The Island, Leithauser put on an impressive show, with a set that leaned heavily on tracks from the album while also featuring several tracks from throughout his solo career. Wearing a tie and beige jacket, Leithauser and his band of Texans ran though numbers like “Knockin’ Heart”, “A 1000 Times” and “Stars of Tomorrow,” a song Leithauser described as being sort of inspired by a true story, explaining that while it is true that this song was indeed based on a story that really was conveyed to him, he can’t guarantee that the story itself was true. Either way, it’s a solid tune. And Leithauser’s certainly got his fair share of those.
