Film Review: Heavier Trip (Juuso Laatio, Jukka Vidgren, 2024)

The sequel to 2018’s Heavy Trip, Heavier Trip follows the continuing exploits of Impaled Rektum, the self-professed “Symphonic Post-apocalyptic Reindeer-grinding Christ-abusing Extreme War Pagan Fennoscandic Metal” band who, in the first film, humorously discovered that original sound they’d been looking for by taking inspiration from the sound a reindeer carcass made when stuck in a meat grinding machine.

The film is a satirical yet good natured look at the modern day metal scene, poking fun at its various tropes in its tale of an aspiring young band whose hopes of making it big seem finally within reach. Our cast of characters includes Lotvonen, the guitarist who struggles to create a decent solo that would make Dave Mustaine proud, bassist Xytrax, the stereotypical metal snob who’s seen it all before and thinks most of it sucks (while also harbouring a not-so-secret love of Babymetal), drummer Oula, the somewhat unstable drummer who is at the same time the most sensible and practical member, and frontman Turo, who’ll do almost anything to be a success.

Following the events of the first film, the four members of Impaled Rektum (though they pronounced it “im-pall-ed”) are offered a spot at the prestigious Wacken Festival by sinister music promoter Fisto that will not only give them a shot at their big break, but also provide them with the much needed cash to help save Lotvonen’s family farm from going under. The only catch? They’ve got to escape from prison first.

What follows is a rather silly journey as the foursome work their way from the somewhat luxurious Norwegian prison in which they’ve spent the past few years to Europe’s biggest metal festival. Along the way, they cross paths with a few interesting characters (including the lead singer of a death metal band with a comically deep voice and the members of Babymetal) and make a few compromises that threaten to tear the band apart.

Heavier Trip is by no means the deepest film out there, but as light hearted death metal road movies go, it’s a fun ride.
