Concert Review: Rendez Vous, October 27, The Garrison

Touring behind their latest album Downcast (released back in May of this year), French five-piece Rendez Vous took to the stage at The Garrison on Sunday night for a set full of dark, heavy post-punk.

When we think of post-punk, many might think of synth-heavy, ’80s inspired tunes, and there’s certainly some of that in Rendez Vous’ earlier work, but with their new album, the band has broadened their scope of influences, offering up a harsher, heavier sound that often brings to mind late ’90s alt rock with elements of shoegaze, metal, and industrial in the mix as well – one look at the band’s wardrobe for the evening, including Dark Funeral and Whirr t-shirts, would certainly suggest that they’re not just interested in aping Joy Division … not that there’s anything wrong with that.

And though the band’s sound has definitely evolved over the years, one of the bigger reactions they got from the crowd was for an older track, “The Distance,” which they introduced by saying, “I think you might know this next song. If you don’t, that’s OK.” Very diplomatic of them.

Overall, Rendez Vous put on a solid performance for the smallish but dedicated crowd, one that even got some of the staff at The Garrison dancing a bit from behind the bar by the end of their set.

The band’s North American tour continues into early November. Check out the video below for “Downcast.”
