Concert Review: The Devil Makes Three, November 15, 9:30 Club

You know what’s a bit odd? Early shows. Showing up at the 9:30 Club at 11 PM on a Friday night and seeing a crowd – that is compatible with every concert experience I’ve really ever had. But showing up at the 9:30 Club at 7:00 and seeing the same scene? Just a little… off-putting. Not even in a bad way. But that’s how I felt this Friday when I showed up for the Devil Makes Three show. The crowd, the excitement, the intoxication…. Easy guys. Bars are still serving happy hour specials.

That being said, if you’re going to rally for an early night, shedding your suits for your short skirts and stilettos (or in this case, cowboy boots and fringe purses) and running out the door for a great show, Devil Makes Three will not disappoint. The trio rocked the 9:30 Club – proving their sound translates in the nation’s top concert rooms. The crowd was wildly swing -dancing on the upper balcony and rocking out as much as the packed room would allow on main floor. As usual, Lucia Turino rocked the stage with her unbelievable bass playing, and Pete Bernhard and Cooper McBean led the charge with silver fox looks, smooth lyrics, and impeccable banjo and guitar playing.

Crowd pleasers that stood out were the band’s For Good Again and Do Wrong Right. The trio also introduced some new tracks from their most recent album I’m A Stranger Here which were enthusiastically received from the early bird, pumped-up crowd.
