Concert Review: Kate Nash, October 18, Longboat Hall

I’d heard tell that for her current tour, Kate Nash would be having “karaoke therapy” sessions wherein audience members could take to the stage to belt out songs between acts. I have no idea if any such sessions happened at any other dates on the tour but, unless I somehow missed it, it seems we weren’t privy to any of that at the Toronto show.

We did, however, get an impromptu group singalong to 4 Non Blondes’ “What’s Up?” when it played over the PA as part of the pre-show mix, which brought at least a bit of that karaoke vibe. Clearly this crowd was ready to have some fun. And from the looks of things, so was Kate Nash.

Taking to the stage alongside her three-piece band, Nash started things off strong with “Millions of Heartbeats,” The lead track off her latest release, 9 Sad Symphonies. On tour in North America for the first time in six years (Nash also mentioned that this album was the first time in 12 years that she’s been affiliated with a record label – Kill Rock Stars), Nash seemed to be making up for lost time, putting on a high energy show that had many singing along throughout to tunes like “Mouthwash”, “Birds” and “Foundations” – again, not quite karaoke, but karaoke-esque for sure. And, ultimately, a lot of fun.
