Project Nowhere Review: Population II, Frankie and the Witch Fingers, October 4, Nineteen Seventy Eight

Now in its second year, Project Nowhere is a festival taking place at a handful of venues along the Dundas West strip and featuring such notables as Lee Ranaldo and Lightning Bolt in this year’s lineup. Having missed out on the first night of the fest, I hit the ground running on the second night, starting things off with some stellar sets from Population II and Frankie and the Witch Fingers.

An impressive crew of musicians with a sound that ran the gamut from spaced-out, jazzy trippiness to full on heavy riffage, Population II blew me away with their performance. I had seen the Montreal trio once before a few months back at SXSW and liked what I heard. But having caught only part of their show that night and with so much else going on in Austin to distract me, I wasn’t able to fully appreciate what they had to offer at the time. But on this night, they had my full attention.

Announcing at the outset that they would play some old songs, some new songs and a song with a friend, they stayed true to their word and did just that. And the song that saw their friend joining them on vocals may have been my favourite of the whole set, coming across like Hawkwind if they were a hardcore band.

Following Population II, LA’s Frankie and the Witch Fingers kept the party going for the fairly packed house at Nineteen Seventy Eight. Sounding a bit like Black Sabbath gone Afrobeat, the band definitely impressed with their heavy psych rock sound.

Frankie and the Witch Fingers are currently on tour behind their latest release, 2023’s Data Doom. Check out the video below for their most recent single, the non-album track “Bonehead.”
