Comedy Review: Come What Mayhem! (Second City)

How does one really review comedy?

I asked this last time and I’m still not sure. There really is no sure fire metric, humor is so subjective.

Anyways, Come What Mayhem is the new sketch comedy show from the Second City crew. The main theme of this show can be described as first world issues in modern times.

You have to hand it to the writers, they pulled no punches. Every hot topic you have discussed with your friends and coworkers are put on the table. Pop culture, weight issues, online dating, transgender issues, racism and terrorism all have their turn during the two hour(ish) show. Some will have you in laughter, some might feel awkward (the occasional skit traded in humor for lectures, it seemed) but most will have you nodding in agreement. It is very much a reflection of a lot of what is going on in the world today put through the lens of all too real skits. Those looking for a bit of escape will find no solace. While those topics are funny, I found some of the skits which stepped away from the modern news cycle to be more enjoyable, simply because I couldn’t quite tell where it was going. Perhaps it was the escapist in me, I don’t know.

it is refreshing to see a show be so unafraid to tackle hot button issues and the cast displayed a wide variety of talents with a good knack for physical humor. All in all, you can’t go wrong with some comedy any night of the week. Here’s some info about the shows. Be warned, there is audience participation so if you are shy, don’t sit too close :)

Come What Mayhem plays until January 2nd at The Second City Toronto Mainstage Theatre (51 Mercer Street)
Show runs Tuesday to Thursday at 8pm, Friday and Saturday at 7:30pm and 10:00pm, and Sunday at 7:30pm.
