Comedy Review: Unwrapped (Second City)

How does one really review comedy? Everyone has a different sense of humor. The jokes I laugh at might not be the ones you laugh at. I guess the same problem applies to shows like Unwrapped, a seasonal comedy show that recently debut at Second City. How do you make everyone laugh? You probably can’t, but what you can do is make people laugh some of the time, and you do that with variety. I think the people of sketch comedy have figured this out.

Featuring the Second City touring company, Unwrapped is a sketch comedy show with a large amount of variety. Having never been to Second City, I was unsure what to expect. What I got was a high energy show with enthusiastic performers performing a wide variety of acts, from music numbers about recent phenomena to sketches about Toronto life to bits about Christmas itself. Credit the writers of the show for melding some very modern elements that would most likely delight a younger demographic with some good ole traditional holiday jokes. The varied topics kept things interesting during the show and most certainly delighted the crowd. I don’t want to divulge too much into the skits, but I did find one about the need to watch important movies particularly entertaining.

It was my first time at Second City and I definitely enjoyed myself. It’s one of those places where people are always aware that it’s there, but somehow don’t venture to very much. I wonder why that is. Anyways, Unwrapped runs to January 1st. Take a loved one, or just a platonic friend. Whatever.
