Concert Review: Queens of the Stone Age, Stage AE, Pittsburgh PA (September 14th)

Enough with the indie-pop-emo-beach-punk-can’t-make-up-your-mind music. Every once in a while it’s great to see a ROCK band. One that owns it. One that sets its music to oddly entertaining, slightly disturbing animations of slow-moving skulls and crying women. One that attracts crowds of black-garbed fans who are friendly enough to buy you a beer… and a T-shirt.

Queens of the Stone Age delivered all that and more in Pittsburgh this weekend. The band played a substantial set, entertaining their enthused crowd for over an hour with favorites old and new. I am relatively new to the band, although No One Knows was familiar (and highly enjoyable) and I also especially liked the opening track (My God is the Sun) as well as the Feel Good Hit of the Summer, which the band saved for the encore.

While I love the genre-hopping trends of the younger indie set as much as the next person, it was truly refreshing to feel situated at the heart of a musical movement that’s been around for more than the Facebook era. If, like me, you’re feeling a bit daunted by the imminence of autumn and uninspired with the end-of-summer music offerings, I’d definitely recommend looking up QOTSA. No matter where your music morale is right now, they’re absolutely worth a listen.
