Jamaican Queens - Wormfood

You know when you hear a song, one of those songs that just punches you in the gut, and makes you smile at the same time? The song you know you could listen to on repeat and never get sick of, and could make it on any mix tape (or online playlist), that you may make? Enter, Jamaican Queens. A few songs on their album Wormfood do it for me, but Kids Get Away is the one that anyone who sees my Rdio history on Facebook knows I listen to at least twice a day.

The song has got this great electronic beat and synth to it, but with these very violent, scary lyrics like “I was covered in mace, lover they cut up your face”. This trio is from Detroit, and if anyone has been following the news, Detroit isn’t the safest place to be right now and the city has  just declared bankruptcy. The songs seems a testament to the unsafe nature of certain neighborhoods. If you watch the disturbing video, it follows a girl as she’s being lovingly stalked by a dude who could be a poster boy for freaky serial killers or pedophiles. At the end of the night after being out with her friends, she’s attacked by a second man in her apartment. As a woman, that shit freaks me out. I won’t tell you how it ends, you can watch it for yourself.

Jamaican Queens are actually playing Handlebar tonight for only seven bones in Kensington Market. I highly suggest you check it out.
